However, there are still things you can do to avoid erectile dysfunction as you grow older.
Here are 11 tips to help protect your erections:
1.) Follow A Healthy Diet
If your diet is not good for your heart, then it is definitely going to affect your ability to achieve healthy and strong erections.
A lot of research studies have revealed that the exact eating patterns that can lead to heart attacks because of reduced blood flow in the coronary arteries also reduce the blood flowing into the penis.
You need healthy blood flow to be able to achieve and maintain your erections.
So, if your diet consists of a lot of processed, canned, fried, fatty and oily foods – it can gradually contribute to poor blood circulation all over your body.
Any food that is not good for your heart is very bad for your penile health.
Current research studies have revealed that erectile dysfunction is quite rare among men whose diet is similar to the Mediterranean diet, which include lots of vegetables, fruits, fish, red wine (maximum of 1 glass per day), whole-grain foods and using heart-friendly fats and oils like groundnut oil and olive oil for frying and cooking.
The connection between the Mediterranean diet and healthy sexual performance in men has already been recognized scientifically.
It does not matter if you are in Nigeria and the Mediterranean diet seems strange to you – it simply involves eating more of the right kind of foods that I just listed above in the proper quantity.
2.) Keep A Healthy Body Weight
When you are overweight, it comes with some unnecessary health problems like type 2 diabetes which could lead to nerve damage.
The instance type 2 diabetes begin affecting the nerves that are linked to the penis, it would cause erectile dysfunction.
3.) Avoid High Cholesterol And High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure and high cholesterol are two conditions that could damage the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis. In the long run, this can cause erectile dysfunction.
If you are over the age of 40 years then make sure that you always go for regular checkups for your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. This is standard procedure in all the General hospitals in Lagos and Abuja-FCT, I don’t know of other states in Nigeria but I assume that it is the same thing.
You can also get a portable blood pressure monitor and portable cholesterol testing device to check your blood pressure and blood cholesterol at home.
If you discover that your blood cholesterol of blood pressure is out of the safe range, make sure you discuss with your doctor on how to get it treated.
Erectile dysfunction can also occur as a result of artery damage caused by hypertensions (high blood pressure).
4.) Watch Your Alcohol Intake – Drink In Moderation
Even though there is no evidence that proves that mild or even moderate consumption of alcohol can cause erectile dysfunction.
However it is well know that chronic drinking of alcohol can lead to liver damage, nerve damage and other medical conditions, such as disrupting the usual balance of testosterone and estrogen hormones which can lead to erectile dysfunction.
5.) Engage In Regular Exercise
There are different research studies that have linked an inactive lifestyle to erectile dysfunction
Jogging, step ups, swimming and other types of cardiovascular exercise have been proven to help men in preventing the occurrence of erectile dysfunction.
Stay away from any kind of exercise that puts extreme pressure on your perineum – this is the region between your anus and your testicles (scrotum).
This is because the nerves and the blood vessels in that area of your genitals can be negatively affected if your form of exercise puts too much pressure in this area. Too much bicycle riding especially can lead to erectile dysfunction.
Don’t get me wrong, riding your bicycle for 20 – 30 minutes 3 or 4 times a week is enough exercise and would not cause any problems.
However it is the men that spend too much time bicycling that MUST put extra effort to ensure that their bicycle seat fits properly, wear padded cycling shorts and stand up regularly when they are pedaling.
“No-nose” bicycle seats are the best for men because they protect your genitals from numbness and sexual dysfunction.
6.) Stop Smoking / Do NOT Smoke!
I wrote a full length article (click here) why smoking affects your sexual performance. This is because cigarettes smoking can damage blood vessels and reduce the flow of blood to the genitals (penis).
And there is also the substance nicotine that can negatively affect blood circulation around your penis area.
7.) Keep Checks On Your Testosterone Levels
Even if you are in good health, once your pass the age of 50 years, your testosterone levels begin falling rapidly. Once a man clocks the age of 40 years, his testosterone levels begin falling at a rate of 1.3% (or more) per year.

In Nigeria test to check your testosterone levels may be quite expensive, So, I advice that you proactively use every natural means possible to increase your testosterone levels as you grow older.
Why is testosterone so important?
Well it is because low testosterone results in moodiness, reduction in stamina, low sex drive and weak erections. Now you see why you should do your best to keep your testosterone levels up.
8.) Stay Away From Anabolic Steroids
I know this might not apply to you now, but if you ever start bodybuilding later on in life please stay away from anabolic steroids.
When you inject yourself with steroids, sure you would build more muscles but it would shrink your testicles and destroy your body’s ability to produce its own natural testosterone… not forgetting that steroids can also cause erectile dysfunction.
9.) Avoid Rough Sex
Your penis can break!
Yes, even though the penis does not contain any bone, however it can still break when it is erect and you engage in rough sex.
When I mean break, it just means that you are going to experience penile injury (penile fracture). So, take your time and stay away from risky sex positions.
Some penile injuries can result in erectile dysfunction that last for months and some penile injuries can lead to long-lasting erectile dysfunction.
So, take it easy when you are thrusting in and out of your woman’s vagina.
There are different techniques you can use to give your woman amazing orgasms during sexual intercourse that does NOT include very rough sex.
10.) Reduce Unnecessary Stress
When you are stressed up this increase the amount of adrenaline hormone in your blood stream and this makes your blood vessels to contract.
And contracting blood vessels means reduced blood flow to the penis area – this makes it very difficult for you to achieve strong erections.
Do everything possible to reduce tension and stress so that you can feel better. This would ensure that your erections remain strong and healthy.
11.) Do Kegel Exercises Regularly
Doing Kegel exercises frequently can help give you stronger erections and improve bladder control as you grow older.
However doing Kegel exercises alone would not prevent erectile dysfunction especially if you have so many bad health habits like eating too much unhealthy oils and smoking.
