A research study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology revealed that inadequate sleep can negatively affect the quality of a man’s sperm. And also disturbances during sleep can also negatively affect the quality of a man’s sperm.

The Link Between Sleep Deprivation And Sperm Quality

The research study was conducted between January 2008 and June 2011 on a group of 953 men (in Denmark). And the researchers collected: semen samples and blood samples from the participants in addition to putting them through a physical examination.

Each of the participants of the research study was asked to answer some questions about their lifestyle including sleeping pattern and disturbances. The questions on sleep patterns and disturbances were concentrated on the most recent 4 weeks period that they were being asked.

The men who indicated that they had sleep disturbances were found out to have 29% less sperm in their semen samples.

The Findings Of The Study On Sleep Deprivation And Sperm Quality

The findings of the study were that:

“Sleep disturbances showed an inverse U-shaped association with sperm concentration, total sperm count, percent motile and percent morphologically normal spermatozoa, and testis size”

What this simply means in summary is that the men that didn’t sleep well at night had lesser sperm count and more deformed sperm cells than the men that had adequate sleep each night.

According to the study the men who indicated that they experienced sleep disturbances like: sleep apnea, insomnia, waking up several times in the night, inadequate sleep due to job requirements etc. had:

  • 29 percent lesser sperm concentration
  • 6 percent lesser of normal sperms in their semen samples

The study researchers are hoping that subsequent studies will find out whether sleep disturbance treatments would have a positive impact in improving the quality of a man’s sperm and restoring it to normal, healthy levels.

However, it is common sense for us to conclude that if sleep deprivation can reduce sperm count and sperm quality, then getting adequate sleep every night is important if you want to produce strong and healthy sperm that can impregnate a woman.

Some Of The Things Also Found Out In The Study

The study also found out that the men who experienced sleep disturbances were more likely to be overweight or obese and they also had other unhealthy lifestyle habits like: tobacco smoking and heavy alcohol consumption.

So the researchers also point in the report that these factors might also be part of what contributes to the lower sperm count and quality by such participants.
