According to a study that was published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, red wine and other foods that are rich in certain flavonoids could help in reducing your risk of erectile dysfunction.

It was a joint study between Havard University and the University of East Anglia. It discovered that when it comes to avoiding the problem of erectile dysfunction following a diet that is rich in flavonoids can give you the same benefit as walking for 40 minutes every day!

According to the lead researcher of the study (Prof. Aedin Cassidy who is from the University of East Anglia) they were already away that when a man increases his intake of foods that are high in flavonoids, it is helps in reducing the risk of conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

This particular study was however the first to look at the link between regular flavonoid consumption and erectile dysfunction which is a sexual health problems that affects as much as 50% of men that are over the age of 40 years.

These beneficial flavonoids are in lots of plant-based foods and drinks like: tea, red wine, herbs, vegetables and fruits. The researchers looked at six major kinds of popularly consumed flavonoids and discovered that the beneficial ones are: flavones, anthocyanins and flavanones.

The study found out that men who regular consumed foods that are high in these flavonoids reduce their risk of suffering from erectile dysfunction by 10 percent. And we are not talking of eating a lot of these foods or drinking a lot of red wine… you only need to consume a few portion every week.

The study also revealed that men with higher total fruit consumption reduce their risk of erectile dysfunction by as much as 14 percent. If you want to reduce your risk more, then the study advises that you combine regular consumption of flavonoid rich foods (and drinks) with exercise – this could reduce your risk an impressive 21 percent.

Here are some sources of these beneficial flavonoids (flavones, anthocyanins and flavanones) that you should include in your daily diet:

  • Red wine (not more than 25cl a day)
  • Apples
  • Tangerines
  • Oranges
  • Pears
