It sounds strange but new evidence suggests that having low levels of vitamin D nutrient in your body could affect your erections.

In case you don’t know – vitamin D is also regarded as the early morning sunshine vitamin because your body produces it when the skin is exposed to sunshine in the early mornings (before 10am).

Researchers from Italy have discovered that having low levels of vitamin D could increase your chances of erectile dysfunction (impotence).

The research was conducted on 143 men who had different degrees of erectile dysfunction; they discovered that almost half of the men were deficient in vitamin D. And they also found out that only 1 in 5 of the men had optimal vitamin D levels.

Wait… there is still more… the researchers also found out that the men that had the most severe cases of erectile dysfunction had almost one-quarter (24 percent) lower vitamin D levels in their body than the men that had lesser forms of erectile dysfunction.

According to the study author of the research (Alessandra Barassi, M.D.), when a man has low levels of vitamin D in his body system, it is likely to increase the production of free radicals called superoxide ions.

These free radicals (superoxide ions) reduce the levels of nitric oxide in the body… and nitric oxide is a compound that assists the blood vessels in transporting blood.

When you are sexually stimulated, nitric oxide helps your blood vessels to relax and this increases the flow of blood to the penis and this result in an erection – this is the normal scenario.

But, when your body doesn’t have enough quantities of nitric acid, your blood vessels would NOT relax enough to boost blood flow to cause an erection.

So, the end result is that it makes it more difficult for you to get erections when you need it the most!

However, the researchers are currently studying if taking vitamin D supplements regularly is an effective way for a man with normal erectile function (normal erections) to prevent or delay erectile dysfunction.
